Building Jewish Leadership, Community, and Belonging
The IU Hillel Student Executive Board serves as the heart of Jewish student leadership, shaping Jewish life on campus through creativity, hospitality, and purpose. Board members are entrusted with advancing IU Hillel’s mission and collaborating closely with IU Hillel’s professional staff. These positions are paid internships. Expectations for All Board Members:
Serving as an executive board member of IU Hillel is a commitment to leadership, representation, and community-building. Board members act as student leaders at all times who model Jewish values, inclusivity, and engagement in all aspects of campus life. They serve as ambassadors for Hillel, fostering meaningful connections with students, staff, and the broader community, while helping to create a welcoming and supportive environment. As leaders, board members contribute to shaping the organization’s culture, guiding peers, and ensuring that Hillel remains a vibrant and accessible space for all students.
Coffee chats: Engage in one-on-one coffee chats to build relationships within the Hillel student leader community and strengthen collaboration between the board member and club
Attend Weekly Board Meetings: Consistently participate in weekly meetings to discuss programming, strategy, and organizational updates.
Maintain Communication with Staff: Communicate regularly with Hillel professional staff throughout the semester to ensure alignment and support.
Support Global Giving Week: Be actively involved in Global Giving Week initiatives and outreach efforts.
Attend Major Events: Participate in all major Hillel events, including Israelpalooza, Purim Carnival, Mega Shabbat, Jewish holiday celebrations, the Chanukkah Party, the Student Leader Dinner, and the October 7 commemoration.
Shabbat Participation: Attend and contribute to At least 16 assigned Shabbats throughout the academic year. (8 per Semester)
Student Engagement and Marketing: Actively engage other students, promote Hillel events, and assist in marketing efforts to increase campus visibility and participation.
Ambassador Role: Serve as an ambassador for IU Hillel on campus, consistently representing the organization’s mission, values, and commitment to Jewish life and community.
Model Leadership and Inclusion: Demonstrate Jewish leadership, inclusivity, and create a welcoming environment for all participants at every Hillel program and event.
Leadership Development: Participate in Hillel’s leadership training session in the beginning of the term focused on developing student leadership skills and enhancing organizational impact.
President
Purpose:
The President serves as the primary student leader and public representative of IU Hillel, guiding the vision, strategy, and culture of the student executive board. The President works closely with Hillel professional staff and student leaders to ensure that IU Hillel remains a welcoming, vibrant, and supportive Jewish community on campus. Through leadership, presence, and relationship-building, the President helps strengthen Jewish life at Indiana University and ensures that Hillel’s mission and values are reflected in all aspects of student leadership and programming.
Responsibilities:
Committee Leadership: Guide and mentor student leaders serving on committees across the executive board, helping ensure their goals and initiatives are supported.
Staff Partnership: Work closely with the Hillel professional staff team through regular meetings to support leadership development, organizational planning, and overall strategy.
Executive Board Leadership: Lead and manage the IU Hillel Student Executive Board, supporting each vice president in their role and ensuring collaboration across teams.
Strategic Leadership and Representation: Represent the student voice in conversations with Hillel staff, the Board of Governors, and university leadership. Attend Student Cabinet and other campus leadership spaces to advocate for Jewish life and student needs.
Community Leadership: Maintain a strong presence within the Hillel community by attending programs and events, supporting board members, and serving as an approachable leader for students.
Shabbat and Holiday Leadership: Attend and help lead weekly Shabbat experiences and major Jewish holidays, serving as a welcoming and visible leader within the community.
Student Support and Engagement: Foster meaningful relationships with students and provide guidance, mentorship, and support within the Hillel community.
Ambassador Role: Represent IU Hillel with pride and integrity, advocating for the Jewish community and fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all students.
VP of Programming
The Vice President of Programming oversees the planning, execution, and enhancement of Hillel’s events and programs throughout the academic year. This role ensures that all events are engaging, well-organized, and aligned with Hillel’s mission to foster community and connection on campus.
Committee Leadership: Lead and manage the Programming Committee, meeting to plan, coordinate, and evaluate events. Collaborate weekly with the Executive Board to ensure alignment and share updates.
Event Planning and Execution: Work closely with your staff supervisor to understand and manage your event budget. Plan multiple events each semester based on the academic calendar and student interests.
Creative Programming: Develop engaging and enjoyable programs that foster community, connection, and Jewish identity. Identify what types of events resonate most with students and adjust programming accordingly.
Event Committees: Form subcommittees to plan major programs such as the Purim Carnival and Chanukkah Party, recruiting additional members from Greek life and other student groups to expand involvement and resources.
Collaboration: Partner with the Marketing and Engagement teams to promote events effectively and increase attendance.
Event Logistics: Coordinate with staff regarding event logistics, including food, timing, and location, ensuring smooth execution from setup to clean-up.
Community Engagement: Attend events regularly and actively engage with attendees—both new and returning students—to create a welcoming, familiar, and vibrant environment.
Event Support: Assist with event setup and takedown, modeling teamwork and leadership for committee members.
VP of Engagement
The Vice President of Engagement leads efforts to connect students with IU Hillel’s community, programs, and opportunities. This role focuses on building relationships, increasing participation, and ensuring that every student feels welcomed and included. Through strategic outreach, collaboration, and personalized engagement, the VP of Engagement plays a key role in strengthening Hillel’s student involvement.
Collaborative Outreach: Work with the Vice President of Community Outreach to maintain communication channels—such as a group chat—with representatives from major student organizations to enhance collaboration and shared programming.
Committee Leadership: Develop and manage a committee of student interns focused on engagement, setting clear goals and expectations for each member and supporting them in achieving their outreach targets.
Engagement Strategy: Design and implement strategies to connect with under-engaged students through personalized outreach methods such as texting, coffee chats, and tabling events.
Freshman Outreach: Lead initiatives to connect with first-year students, including dorm tabling events with food and information about Hillel.
Event Follow-Up: Coordinate engagement follow-ups after major Hillel programs and events to sustain student involvement and strengthen relationships.
Student Representation: Assign committee members as representatives to partner clubs and organizations, ensuring attendance and engagement at:
FYSH – 1 committee meeting or event
Sports Grille – 1 committee meeting or event
BLI – Attend at least 1 event
IUDM – Attend 1 meeting
Social Committee – Attend 1 meeting and all social events as engagers
Program Support: Assist Hillel staff and student leaders with outreach and promotion for events, and attend Hillel programming regularly to actively engage with students. By consistently attending most events, you provide a familiar presence for returning students and help welcome new students met through coffee chats, tabling, and other outreach efforts, fostering community and encouraging participation.
Relationship Building: Reach out to new and returning students to foster connections and help them engage with Hillel’s community or host programs in partnership with outside organizations (e.g., Ramah).
Mentorship Programs: Help facilitate the Yad B’yad mentorship program, beginning over the summer to launch at the start of the academic year.
Engagement Campaigns: Lead at least one student engagement campaign per semester focused on strengthening community connection and participation.
VP of Community Outreach
The Vice President of Community Outreach strengthens IU Hillel’s connections with campus organizations and student communities, fostering collaboration, inclusion, and engagement. This role serves as a liaison between Hillel and external groups, creating opportunities for partnership and ensuring underengaged students are welcomed into Hillel’s programs.
Collaborative Outreach: Work closely with the VP of Engagement to introduce new students from campus organizations to Hillel and foster ongoing relationships.
Event Collaboration: Partner with the VP of Programming to promote major Hillel events and identify opportunities to collaborate with outside organizations on programming.
Campus Partnerships: Maintain an updated list of campus partners and ensure regular communication through group chats or other channels.
Coordinated Events: Plan and manage collaborative events with external student organizations, working alongside the VP of Programming and Hillel staff to execute successful partnerships.
Engagement Strategy: Develop strategies to reach underengaged student groups, expanding Hillel’s reach and inclusion on campus.
Community Outreach Projects: Lead at least one community outreach project per semester, which may include social events, service initiatives, cultural programming, or other collaborative efforts.
Liaison Role: Build bridges between Hillel and other student organizations, including:
Greek houses (maintaining at least one representative from each house in a group chat to promote events)
Campus culture centers
Interfaith groups
IUSG and Union Board
Large student organizations (e.g., IUSF, IUDM)
Shalom Center and Beth Shalom
Relationship Development: Cultivate and maintain ongoing relationships with Greek houses, culture centers, and other student organizations to strengthen collaboration and participation in Hillel programs.
Vice President of Communications
Purpose:
The Vice President of Communications ensures that IU Hillel’s message, programs, and community impact are clearly communicated to students, parents, alumni, and donors. This role focuses on strategic communication, storytelling, and maintaining consistent messaging across Hillel’s platforms.
Responsibilities
Committee Leadership: Lead and manage a Communications Committee responsible for supporting social media posting, newsletter development, and storytelling initiatives.
Staff Partnership: Meet regularly with the assigned Hillel staff advisor to review communication plans, coordinate messaging, and ensure effective outreach.
Communication Strategy: Develop and manage IU Hillel’s overall communication strategy to ensure clear and consistent messaging across audiences including students, parents, alumni, and donors.
Social Media and Digital Communication: Manage Hillel’s social media platforms and posting schedule to ensure timely promotion of events, announcements, and community updates.
Newsletter Management: Create and distribute newsletters that share Hillel programming, student experiences, and community updates with supporters and donors.
Storytelling and Community Impact: Highlight student leadership, Jewish life on campus, and the impact of Hillel programs through written and digital communication.
Collaboration with Content Creation: Work closely with the VP of Content Creation to ensure graphics and promotional materials align with communication goals and messaging.
VP of Content Creation
Purpose:
The Vice President of Content Creation leads the visual and creative marketing efforts for IU Hillel. This role ensures that all marketing materials are visually engaging, organized, and aligned with IU Hillel’s brand while supporting the promotion of programs and events across the organization.
Responsibilities
Committee Leadership: Lead and manage a Content Creation Committee responsible for designing graphics, creating promotional materials, and supporting visual marketing needs.
Staff Partnership: Meet regularly with the assigned Hillel staff advisor to review marketing needs, manage timelines, and ensure materials are completed efficiently.
Marketing Request Management: Oversee the marketing request form and ensure that submissions from Hillel clubs, committees, and staff are completed accurately and on time.
Graphic Creation and Oversight: Lead the creation of graphics and visual promotional materials that support Hillel events, programs, and initiatives.
Brand Standards: Ensure all graphics and promotional materials follow IU Hillel’s branding guidelines and include appropriate logos when collaborating with partner organizations.
Event Marketing Collaboration: Work closely with the VP of Programming and other board members to ensure events are effectively promoted through engaging visual content.
Quality Control: Review marketing materials before publication to ensure clarity, accuracy, and visual consistency.
