IU’s Religious Observance Policy
Students are permitted to miss classes for religious observances. The IU Faculty Council has enacted a religious observance policy stating that professors are required to make, “a reasonable accommodation when a student must miss an exam or other academic exercise because of a required religious observance. With timely notice, students must be allowed to make up the work that was missed. Absence for a religious observance does not count toward the number of absences an instructor might allow in a class.”
At Indiana University, students are fully supported in observing their religious traditions. If you need to miss class, an exam, or any academic assignment due to a religious holiday, your professors are required to offer reasonable accommodations so you can make up the work.
Religious absences do not count toward any attendance limits set by instructors.
To take advantage of this policy, you’ll need to fill out a Religious Observance Form within the first two weeks of the semester.
This policy helps ensure that all students feel welcomed and respected in both their academic and spiritual lives.
