Building Jewish Leadership, Community, and Belonging
The IU Hillel Student Executive Board serves as the heart of Jewish student leadership, shaping Jewish life on campus through creativity, hospitality, and purpose. Board members are entrusted with advancing IU Hillel’s mission and collaborating closely with IU Hillel’s professional staff. These positions are paid internships. Expectations for All Board Members
Serving as an Executive Board member of IU Hillel is a commitment to Jewish leadership, representation, and community-building. Board members model Jewish values, inclusivity, and engagement in all aspects of campus life. They serve as ambassadors for Hillel, fostering meaningful connections with students, staff, and the broader IU community while helping create a welcoming and supportive environment.
As leaders, board members embody kehillah (community), achrayut (responsibility), chesed (kindness), and hachnasat orchim (hospitality) — shaping Hillel’s culture, guiding peers, and ensuring IU Hillel remains a vibrant, accessible home for all Jewish students.
Coffee Chats & Relational Engagement
Engage in regular one-on-one coffee chats to build relationships with students and to strengthen collaboration between Hillel and student organizations across campus.
Prioritize both relational engagement and attendance by focusing on building meaningful connections, making Hillel’s programs and events accessible to as many students as possible.
Attend Weekly Board Meetings
Participate consistently in weekly meetings to discuss programming, strategy, and updates.
Be prepared, collaborative, and contribute ideas rooted in Jewish values and leadership.
Maintain Communication with Staff
Communicate regularly with Hillel professional staff to ensure alignment, share progress, and seek mentorship.
Attend regular one-on-one check-ins with your staff mentor for support and leadership development.
Support Peer-to-Peer Fundraising
Be actively involved in all IU Hillel peer-to-peer fundraising initiatives and outreach, representing the student voice in Hillel’s culture of tzedakah (righteous giving) and gratitude.
Attend Major Events
Participate in all major Hillel events: IsraelPalooza, Purim Carnival, Mega Shabbat, High Holidays, Chanukah Party, Student Leader Dinner, and the October 7 Commemoration.
Shabbat Participation
Attend and contribute to all assigned Shabbats throughout the academic year and find a replacement when necessary. Greet guests, help with setup/cleanup, and serve as a welcoming presence for new and returning students.
Student Engagement and Marketing
Actively engage peers, promote Hillel events, and assist in marketing efforts to increase visibility and participation across campus.
Represent Hillel
Ambassador of IU Hillel’s mission and values with pride in all campus interactions. Be a bridge between Hillel and the broader IU community.
Leadership and Inclusion
Demonstrate inclusive Jewish leadership at every Hillel program and event. Foster belonging across identities, backgrounds, and expressions of Jewish life.
Leadership Development
Participate in Hillel’s leadership trainings and planned retreats throughout the leadership term.
Commit to building the pipeline of future student leaders by mentoring emerging student leaders and high-potential students and modeling hachsharah (leadership readiness).
Accountability & Reflection
Complete regular leadership reflections or check-ins as determined by the Student Board President and staff mentor.
Respond promptly to all communication and uphold commitments.
Vice President of Programming
Purpose: Create joyful, meaningful, and inclusive Jewish experiences that bring students together around celebration, learning, and belonging. Programming is a sacred act of hachnasat orchim, creating welcoming spaces where Jewish life thrives in community.
Responsibilities
Committee Leadership: Lead and manage the Social Committee; meet regularly to plan, coordinate, and evaluate events.
Event Planning & Execution: Plan multiple events per semester aligned with the Jewish calendar, student interests, and IU Hillel’s mission.
Creative Programming: Develop engaging programs that reflect simcha (joy) and Jewish identity. Innovate while maintaining Hillel’s inclusive spirit.
Event Committees: Form subcommittees to plan major programs (e.g., Purim Carnival, Chanukah Party), recruiting additional students from Greek life, cultural orgs, Jewish Studies, and other potential partners.
Budget Collaboration: Work closely with staff to manage the event budget responsibly.
Promotion & Collaboration: Partner with the Marketing and Engagement teams to promote programs effectively and increase attendance.
Event Logistics: Coordinate with staff on food, timing, location, accessibility, and security; oversee smooth setup and takedown.
Community Engagement: Attend events regularly, welcome students, and build relationships with participants.
Assessment: Track attendance and submit post-event feedback and success reflections.
Vice President of Marketing & Communication
Purpose: To tell IU Hillel’s story through authentic, creative, and values-driven communication that celebrates Jewish life and student leadership. Marketing is edut (bearing witness), sharing the story of IU Hillel and Jewish life on campus with pride, authenticity, and ruach (spirit).
Responsibilities
Marketing Leadership: Develop and execute a communication strategy that aligns with IU Hillel’s mission and brand.
Social Media Management: Oversee Hillel’s social media (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok), ensuring consistent, engaging, and timely content.
Committee Leadership: Establish and lead a Marketing & Communications Committee; recruit and assist in training members each semester.
Content Calendar: Create and maintain a content calendar aligned with the Jewish calendar and major Hillel events.
Graphic Requests: Oversee the Google Form process for weekly and special graphics (Bagel Break, Shabbat, social events, Israel programs, etc.).
Brand Integrity: Ensure all materials reflect Hillel’s inclusive Jewish identity and visual standards.
Storytelling & Documentation: Capture and share stories, photos, and videos that highlight student voices and community life.
Analytics & Improvement: Track engagement metrics and report trends to the Executive Board and Hillel staff.
Creative Collaboration: Partner with the Development VP for donor communications and gratitude campaigns.
Vice President of Development
Purpose: To build a culture of tzedakah (righteous giving) and hakarat hatov (gratitude) within the IU Hillel student community. Development is tzedakah in action, uniting generosity, gratitude, and responsibility to sustain IU Hillel and Jewish life on campus today, and for future generations.
Responsibilities
Fundraising Leadership: Oversee student-led fundraising efforts (Global Giving Week, Big Ten Challenge, IUDM, Save a Child’s Heart).
Strategic Collaboration: Partner with staff and student leaders to plan effective peer-to-peer fundraising.
Donor Relations: Maintain communication with donors and alumni to express appreciation and share impact.
Peer Fundraising Team: Recruit and mentor a team of student fundraisers who act as campaign ambassadors.
Smaller Fundraisers: Plan additional micro-campaigns to sustain engagement throughout the year.
Gratitude Projects: Lead one gratitude initiative per semester (e.g., donor thank-you notes, alumni appreciation events).
Meetings: Attend monthly Marketing/Development calls and meet regularly with the Director of Operations and Advancement.
Culture of Giving: Encourage all student board members and leaders to contribute meaningfully to Hillel’s campaigns and actively participate in peer-to-peer fundraising.
Collaborative Partnerships: Work with campus partners (IUDM, Save a Child’s Heart, etc.) to expand Hillel’s philanthropic impact.
Vice President of Engagement
Purpose: To cultivate relationships that help every Jewish student find belonging, connection, and purpose within Hillel’s kehillah, community. Engagement is arevut, mutual responsibility. We build Jewish life by investing in people, not just programs and events.
Responsibilities
Collaborative Outreach: Partner with the VP of Community Outreach to maintain communication with key campus groups.
Committee Leadership: Lead a committee of student engagers, setting student engagement goals and supporting their development.
Engagement Strategy: Design initiatives to connect under-engaged students through texts, coffee chats, and tabling.
First-Year Outreach: Support FYSH efforts, organize dorm tabling, and host newcomer events.
Follow-Up & Relationship-Building: Personally follow up with new students after events.
Representation: Work alongside committee leadership of IU Hillel clubs to expand engagement opportunities across the organization (FYSH, Sports Grille, BLI, IUDM, Social Committee).
Event Presence: Be a welcoming, familiar face at events; build continuity between engagement and programming.
Mentorship: Support the Yad B’yad mentorship program from summer through fall.
Engagement Campaigns: Lead at least one major engagement initiative per semester (e.g., “Bring a Friend to Shabbat”).
Vice President of Community Outreach
Purpose: To strengthen IU Hillel’s relationships with the wider campus, fostering tikkun olam (repairing the world) and achdut (unity) through bridge-building and collaboration. Community outreach is tikkun olam in practice, repairing the world through partnership, dialogue, and connection.
Responsibilities
Collaborative Outreach: Work closely with the VP of Engagement to introduce new students from campus orgs to Hillel.
Event Collaboration: Partner with Programming to co-sponsor events that reflect shared values.
Campus Partnerships: Maintain and regularly update a partner contact list (Greek life, cultural centers, interfaith orgs, etc.).
Community Outreach Projects: Lead at least one major outreach project per semester, such as a joint service initiative, interfaith dialogue, or cultural event rooted in Jewish values.
Bridge-Building: Cultivate relationships with Greek chapters, IUSG, Union Board, IUDM, IUSF, Beth Shalom, and/or other potential partner organizations on and off campus.
Representation: Serve as a liaison at campus events that promote inclusivity and collaboration.
Strategic Alignment: Ensure partnerships uphold Hillel’s values and advance its mission of Jewish community building.
