Thanks to donors like you, our IU Hillel doors are open for Jewish Students to connect with one another, explore Jewish life and learning, and grow into Jewish leaders who will make a difference in their communities.

IU Hillel get inquiries, especially at the end of the calendar year, about how to make an impact with a gift from an individual retirement account (IRA). It’s no wonder. Every day, 10,000 Baby Boomers turn 70½ which is the age they can start making gifts out of their traditional IRA accounts. These gifts, called a Qualified Charitable Distribution (“QCD”) or IRA Charitable Rollover, are one of the fastest growing areas of philanthropy.

The top benefits include:

  • Use your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) to make a gift and avoid income taxes.

  • The amount transferred does not count as income, keeping you in a lower tax bracket.

  • May satisfy all or a portion of your RMD for the year

To qualify:

  • You must be age 70½ when the distribution is made to IU Hillel.

  • You may direct up to $100,000 (individual) or $200,000 (per couple).

  • The transfer must be made directly from your IRA to IU Hillel.

How to make a QCD:

  • Contact your IRA plan administrator to make a gift directly from your IRA to us.

  • A letter template is linked here for you to fill out and send to your IRA plan administrator to direct your gift.

This is your opportunity to create joy for Jewish students at IU Hillel and your ongoing support is incredibly meaningful. Thanks to you we continue to keep Jewish students safe, connect them to a caring community, and invest in the future of the Jewish people. I welcome your feedback. Also, feel free to reach out to Development Director Judith Rose at judith@iuhillel.org.

As always, thank you for your continued enthusiasm for and support of IU Hillel. We could not do our work without you.
