IU Hillel is proud to employ some of the finest Jewish professionals in Indiana. Feel free to reach out to any of them for information about Hillel, our programs and services, building tours, or one on one meetings. We're excited to get to meet you!
Rabbi Sue Laikin Silberberg
Rabbi Sue grew up in Indianapolis. She attended Indiana University as an undergraduate, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Social Work. Rabbi Sue attended the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and was ordained in 1988. During Rabbinical school, Sue served as the Hillel Director at the University of Delaware. In August of 1989, following a year in Israel, Rabbi Sue returned to the United States to become the Executive Director of the Helene G. Simon Hillel Center at Indiana University. She loves IU Hillel and the students here.
Rabbi Sue is also committed to promoting diversity on campus. She helped to found Bloomington United, a grassroots community organization dedicated to building diversity and responding to incidents of hate in Bloomington, IN.
Phillip Silberberg joined the Hillel staff in August, 2012. He hails from Johannesburg, South Africa. He graduated from the medical school at the University of the Witswatersrand in Johannesburg and later did his fellowship in Radiology and a Certificate of Added Qualification in Pediatric Radiology in Canada. Phil hasn't looked back after moving to Bloomington, and loves meeting students, parents, alumni and friends of IU Hillel.
Capital Campaign Director
A proud IU Alumna, Carrie brings almost 15 years of local, national, and international fundraising and development experience to IU Hillel. Most recently, she served as the Foundation Manager at Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association in Northbrook, IL, leading their capital campaign to build a new facility for the organization. Carrie returns to Bloomington with her husband, James, and two daughters, Lilia and Maya.
Josh graduated from IU in 2013 and quickly entered the Jewish professional world as a Cantorial Soloist. He then served as Director of Hillel for the University of Tampa. After a brief stint as a space journalist (ask him about going to rocket launches), he has excitedly returned to his alma mater as IU Hillel’s Assistant Director.
Rabbi Ron Klotz
Director of Informal Jewish Education
From 1963 to 1974 Rabbi Ron served the Olin-Sang-Ruby Union Institute in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, as a counselor, specialist, unit head, and assistant director. Ron studied at the Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem and Cincinnati from 1972 through ordination in 1977, during which time he became Director of the URJ's Goldman Union Camp Institute (GUCI). After more than 30 years as Director, Rabbi Ron and his wife Juca have retired to Bloomington, where Ron has continued his commitment to Jewish education, health and safety, and building community.
Israel Program Director
Elana grew up in Houston, TX, and spent a year studying and volunteering in Israel before attending the University of Texas. After receiving her BSW, she moved to Israel, where she remained for almost eight years. Elana worked as an English teacher for the Israeli Ministry of Education and received an MA in the field of education. She moved to the US last year with her husband Asher and their daughter Mali. Elana is thrilled to be sharing her love and knowledge of Israel with the IU community.
Director of Greek Affairs & Engagement
Jess is entering his third year at Indiana Hillel. Jess grew up in Elizabeth, NJ, where he attended Rav Teitz Mesivta Academy. Jess enrolled at Michigan State University (Go Green!) where he was an active participant in Hillel and proud to serve as the president of his fraternity, AEPi. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies in 2016. Jess brings with him a contagious level of joy and sense of adventure (ask him about his solo journey to Thailand), passion, and commitment to the IU Jewish community, and considers himself privileged to be building relationships with the next generation of Jewish leaders on campus. In his free time, Jess enjoys traveling, long walks on the beach, and going camping.
Mason is all about eco-sustainability. He’s the man.
