R180 Leadership Class: Fall 2009

Hillel R180/1 classes are one-credit hour courses are designed to be practical in nature, allowing you to study and apply leadership skills through obtaining a leadership role in Hillel. By getting involved in Hillel R180 classes, you are able to have fun, meet other students who share similar interests, and enhance your personal and professional life by developing self and group leadership skills. Classes are typically held at Hillel or in the Residence Halls in the early evenings. Specific class times will be determined in accordance with students schedules.

During the Fall 2009 Semester, the following R180 classes are being offered:

  • Freshman Leadership: Get an early start with hands-on Hillel involvement!  In this R180, you will work with staff and other students to plan and organize two of our larger fall programs: Hillel’s IU Homecoming Parade float and a Chanukah-themed event on campus.  Have good ideas for events?  Have an artistic side?  Looking for an easy and fun way to get to know several other freshman on campus? Then this is the course for you!

  • Fundraising/Campus Super Star: Campus Super Star, a state-wide vocal competition, is one of IU Hillel’s largest event fundraisers.  It takes contestants through try-outs, a semi-final event at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater in Bloomington, and then a final event and gala at the Madame Walker Theatre Center in downtown Indianapolis.  It is structured after American Idol and attracts students from across our state- all who try out in hopes of winning the $5,000 grand prize.  Students who work with on this project will be a part of managing contestant relationship, soliciting in-kind donations in Bloomington, creating and implementing a marketing plan for each of the events, and are able to be a part of the action (have a role) at the actual events.  It is a lot of fun, and the productions are awesome!

  • JIGL (Jews in Greek Life): With JIGL R180 you will gain leadership skills through planning programming initiatives for Jewish students in Greek life.  It is also a great opportunity to become involved in your house and gain valuable leadership experience in the Greek community.  Not to mention, you will get to meet other Jewish students in Greek life.

  • Love, Sex, & Jewish Relationships: Sex, relationships, love.  How do the media and our communities portray these issues?  Does Judaism have anything to say about the topics?   Discuss these and other issues affecting Jewish college students including interfaith relationships, dating violence, being happy and single, and creating healthy relationships.  Use your knowledge from discussions to plan a group final project impacting IU students.

  • Mitzvah Corp (Social Action): Interested in making a difference?  This R180 will allow you to be involved in local and national community service/social action activities.   From volunteering at the community kitchen or food bank to promoting and collecting items for national initiatives (last year’s group connected to Pages for Prisoners), you will be able to get a taste of volunteer opportunities available.  Tie in hands-on volunteering and a better awareness of the Bloomington community with discussions about community activism and Judaism.
